Free time to play: why it's important to children
余暇ということばが、日本がもっと豊かな時代（バブル）に流行りました。マスコミでも、近所でも、余暇の活用が盛んに言われていたのをおぼえています。余暇は英語ではspare time, free timeなどと言われますが、最近の言い方では、work life balanceというような表現が使われるかもしれません。仕事も余暇も大事ということでしょう。それもバランスが大切だということです。
退職してから余暇あるいは自由がたくさんありそうですが、こんな日記を無駄に書いていると、意外と余暇も潰れていきます。しかし、考えてみれば何のメリットもないこの日記は、私にとっては貴重な余暇です。自分の意思で始めたので、無駄に時間を過ごすことはあまりありません。つまり、余暇と言えば余暇ですが、意味が違います。自由です。また、work life balanceと言われてもちょっと違うかもしれません。
The 10 countries with the best work-life balance in 2024という指標があります。これによると、日本は24位で、次のように説明されています。

1番はニュージーランドで、日本はアジアでは1番です。それでも、OECDの国の人が労働時間以外に平均１５時間を費やしているのに対して、日本は１４時間です。さらに、家庭を持ち、子どもを育てるには課題があると説明しています。
『レジャー白書』(2024)によると、意識としては、余暇を重視する傾向にあるようです。少しずつ生活も改善していて、コロナが落ち着いて、旅行などを楽しみたいという雰囲気になっています。が、余暇の楽しみ方は依然として同じ傾向にあるような気がします。余暇＝遊びというような意識です。極端な言い方をすると、生活のために仕事をして、休暇は遊びに力を注ぐというような生き方です。
私自身は、余暇の方が大切で、仕事は二の次という生き方の方が本来だと思います。余暇こそ生活の主体で、仕事ではないというのが、私の考えです。言い方を換えると、仕事より家庭、あるいは、仕事よりは自分の生き方と思います。自由に考え、行動できる今が好きです。
