昔聞いた英語の歌詞（日本語もそうですが）は、全体の意味をあまり把握しなかったので、ただなんとなく部分的なフレーズだけしか知らず、ときどき気になることがあります。その一つが、「I Shot The Sheriff, but I ....」です。若い頃に聞いたフレーズですが、Eric Claptonの歌とだけおぼえていました。
タイトルは、I Shot The Sheriffです。今回調べてみました。すると、もともとは、Bob Marleyが歌ったレゲエの曲だと知りました。歌詞も背景もほとんど知りませんが、ただ、「私は保安官を撃った」だけの歌かと思ってました。

歌詞は次のようになっているようです。時代や場所によって少しアドリブが入り変わりますが、もともとは次の歌詞となっています。

私の世代では、Eric Claptonのギターは有名です。他にもヒットした曲はありますが、不思議な歌だったんだと歌詞を見て思いました。解説はいろいろあるようですが、お巡りさんを打ち殺すというのは、時代だったと思います。公民権運動やベトナム戦争反対などの反体制の時代に、薬物やレゲエのリズムが受けたのだと思います。
この曲がヒットしたのは、１９７４年だそうです。私が大学生の頃でよくおぼえています。その頃は知りませんでしたが、Bob Marleyの歌の方が、そのまま入ってきて、とてもいいなと思いました。「保安官は撃ち殺したが、副保安官は打っていない」「誰が副保安官を打ったんだ？」ということです。「正当防衛だ」「副保安官を撃ったことの罪で捕まえるのはおかしい。保安官は撃ったが、副保安官は撃っていない」という不条理を歌っているということがよくわかります。

こんな歌だったのかとあらためて知り、いい歌だったんだと納得しました。
また、英語教師としてちょっと気づいたことは、時制(tense)です。規範文法（prescriptive grammar)が学校で尊重されますが、記述文法(descriptive grammar)が実質です。間違いではないわけです。なおさら、そのおかげで歌詞が生き生きして耳に入ってきます。なおさら、この歌が好きになりました。
