The Sound of Silenceは私が中学生ごろに聞いた歌です。Simon & Garfunkelの曲ですが、たぶん知ったのは『卒業(The Graduate)』という映画だったと思いますが、ラジオだったかもしれません。歌詞の意味はよくわからなかったと思いますが、The Sound of Silence（静寂の音）という響きがよかったし、映画の中で使われた他のSimon & Garfunkelの音楽が印象的でした。ビデオは、彼らの歌の変遷です。

映画自体は、当時の流行だったかもしれませんが、終わりが印象的で、結婚式に乱入し、花嫁を連れてバスに乗って、さてこれから何をするのだろう・・・という、後味を残す展開です。映画自体はあまり好きではなかったですが、音楽が映画でうまく利用され、Simon & Garfunkelを知るようになりました。
中学生の頃は、朝、牛乳配達のアルバイトをして、ラジカセ（死語ですが、ラジオを録音できるようにカセットテープがついていたもの）を買いました。音楽を聴くようになったのもその頃です。英語という言語に関心を示したのもその頃です。しかし、英語の歌詞自体はそれほど気にもせず聞いていました。当時は、英語の授業と英語の歌などはほとんど結びつかないような状況でした。英語は、考えることもしない苦手でつまらない授業でした。
The Sound of Silenceの歌詞は次のようになっています。あらため読んでみると、ちょっと考えさせられます。

（要旨）暗闇はサイレンスの音とともにあり、ひとり街を歩きネオンの光の中でサイレンスの音に触れる。そこに多くの人がいるのにサイレンスの音を誰も邪魔しない。サイレンスはガンのようにでき、ネオンの神に人は祈り、ネオンは警告する。「預言者の言葉は街の片隅に書かれている」とサイレンスの音の中でネオンが言う。
なんとなくわかるが、正確には何を言わんとしているか、よくわかリマセン。確かに雑踏の中にいても人は孤独な気分を味わうことが多く、６０年前と今でも状況は違うが同じ気分は誰でも持つだろうと思います。
The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement hallsという一節が印象的です。聴くところによる Paul Simonがロンドンにいるときに耳にした一説だそうですが、神の預言者の言葉は教会ではなく貧しい人たちの住んでいるところに書かれているというような意味で、そこでは、声なき声がたくさんあるという意味なのかな、勝手に考えます。The sound(s) of silenceとはそういう意味なのでしょう。
