The Moomins turn 80 in 2025 ✨ #moomin
「ムーミン」という言葉はみんなが知っています。フィンランドのTove Janssonがつくった話にもとづいた言葉です。「ムーミン」は英語ではThe Moomins（ムーミン一家）という意味を表していますが、Moominという用語は、抽象的にMoominの世界を表すようにして使われています。というのは、The Moomin Familyはムーミンの世界に登場する多くのCharactersを含んでいるからです。
The Moomins are the central characters in a series of Moomin books and a Moomintroll comic strip by Tove Jansson. The adventurous Moomin family live in their house in Moominvalley and have many adventures with their various friends.
いわゆるムーミンは、Moomintrollのことです。次のようにウェブで紹介されています。
A brave and loyal friend
Moomintroll is kind, caring and curious, a great lover of nature and a true friend. His life is full of excitement and adventure, thanks to his daring companions and the tolerant – and somewhat eccentric – Moominmamma and Moominpappa. Although he can be a sensitive character, anxious not to offend and susceptible to being teased (especially by Little My…), Moomintroll is bold and courageous whenever it is required of him. He is inclined to look for the positives in any situation and to embrace every experience that presents itself, making him a lot of fun to spend time with!

基本的にはこのムーミンが物語の主人公ですが、全体ではそうはなっていなくて、特徴のあるキャラクターがたくさん出てきます。それがこの話に多くの人を惹きつけるポイントなのだろうと思います。
私は次のキャラクターが印象に残っています。
Ninny, the invisible child
Ninny is an invisible child who has become invisible after being treated badly for a long time. She comes to the Moomin family to perhaps become visible again thanks to their care. The invisible Ninny is proper, polite, and, according to Moomintroll and Little My, annoyingly bad at playing. Everyone in the family tries to help Ninny in their own specific ways. They provide security, teach her to play, challenge her to take up space and show her emotions. During her time with the Moomin family, Ninny changes and becomes more and more visible. The visible Ninny is strong-willed and full of emotions and surprises everyone with her ability to take action.

Toveはヘルシンで生まれたスウェーデン語が母語のアーティストで、「ムーミン」はスウェーデン語で書かれています。それがフィンランド語や英語に訳されて、さらに多くの言語に訳され、世界中で知られています。日本では１９９０年代にアニメで放映され、明るく楽しいムーミン一家として定着して、今日のキャラクタービジネスとなっています。
しかし、多くの人は、物語自体はあまり知らないかもしれません。それぞれのキャラクターに自分を投影し、「ムーミン」の世界観が好きなようです。実際、私もすべての話は知りません。
フィンランドを訪れるようになってから、少しずつ背景を理解するようになりました。Toveはアーティストで「ムーミン」はその一部です。Toveの生き方や作品を見ると、「ムーミン」に登場するキャラクターのそれぞれが生き生きと理解できるようになりました。人はそれぞれコンプレックスがあり、悩みがあり、生きづらさを抱えています。彼女もそうだったのでしょう。それを癒してくれる場が「ムーミン」という架空の場所で、それは楽園でなく、フィンランドのような自然の中にあるスピリチュアルな世界なのでしょう。私も小さい頃は群馬の田舎の山の中で育ちましたが、温泉町で人もそれなりにいて、旅人もいて、一人になりたければ林の中に入れば簡単に動物や植物を触れ合い、自分の世界に入ることができました。
人はそういう場が必要なのだと思います。そういう場には当然「ムーミン」のような環境が大切なのでしょう。その点で、「ムーミン」は好きです。
