What are Wildfires?
山火事(wildfires)が起きています。乾燥していると自然に火事は起きます。オーストラリアなどの乾燥した木々があるところでは日常的で、bushfiresと呼ばれています。ちょっと前のLos Angelsの山火事の被害は悲惨でした。日本でも先日の大船渡、現在の今治、岡山の火事は心配です。日本の場合は、日の不始末が原因ではないかという噂がありますが、それはそれとしても乾燥が大きな要因でしょう。
数年前に、多摩川河川敷でもちょっとしたボヤがありました。私は散歩中だったので、消防に通報しましたが、多くの人がすでに通報していて、すぐに消防が来て消化しました。その時は確かに乾燥していたので、燃え方は早かったです。消失面積はかなりありました。翌日になっても木から煙が出ていました。
以前、軽井沢に山小屋を持っていたときに、暖炉の灰を捨てるときは気をつけていたのをおぼえています。しっかりと消火しないと危険です。一度消火したと思った灰がもとでまた燃えていたのを見たことがあります。山や森での火の不始末は確かに危険ですが、やはり乾燥が大きいです。日本はそれほど大きな山火事はあまり聞いたことがありませんが、よほど乾燥しているという異常気象が大きな原因であるのは間違いありません。それに加えて、山火事を広げるのは、風です。

Wildfires frequently occur in Japan between January and May, when the air is drier, but they tend to be much smaller in size than the one burning in early 2025, according to news reports. However, conditions were unusually dry leading up to this event. Ofunato received only 2.5 millimeters (0.1 inches) of precipitation in February 2025, the lowest monthly total for February in a record going back to 1964. Strong winds that fanned the flames and steep terrain that challenged containment efforts also contributed to this fire’s growth, experts told news outlets.
Fireということで世界中の山火事が2000年から2025年までどこで起きているかを見ることができます。それを見ると日本はほとんど目立ちません。アフリカ、アジアなどが目立ちますが、世界中で起きています。
On Earth, something is always burning. Wildfires are started by lightning or accidentally by people, and people use controlled fires to manage farmland and pasture and clear natural vegetation for farmland. Fires can generate large amounts of smoke pollution, release greenhouse gases, and unintentionally degrade ecosystems. But fires can also clear away dead and dying underbrush, which can help restore an ecosystem to good health. In many ecosystems, including boreal forests and grasslands, plants have co-evolved with fire and require periodic burning to reproduce.
それによると、枯れ木などをきれいにする意味では効果的であると書いてあります。
１０年以上前にLA に行ったとき、山並みに煙を見ました。「火事ですか？」と尋ねると、ドライバーは「いつものことです」と応えたのをよくおぼえています。野焼き(field burning)は農業で多く行われていますが、二酸化炭素の放出という点で課題もあります。ある意味で昔から必要に応じて自然の火事は発生しています。人間は火と付き合って生きてきたので、このような山火事の被害が気になるようになってきたのは、おそらくその付き合い方がよくない、あるいは、気候が変動していることに人間が追いついていないということになるのかもしれません。
