　　The Graduate - Scarborough Fair

The Graduate (卒業）という映画には多くのSimon & Garfunkelの音楽が使われています。その中で、Scarborough Fairが好きです。最初はまったく知らなかったのですが、イングランドのScarboroughを訪れる機会があり、イングランドやスコットランドの民謡(folk song, ballad)であることを知りました。Paul Simonが英国に滞在していた際に知ったようです。

The Scarborough Fairは、Scarboroughでフェスティバルとしてさまざまに開催されています。３０年以上も前にちょっとだけ訪れました。お城もありすてきな海岸沿いの町です。Scarborough Fairと映画は何も関係ありませんが、やはり印象的な曲でよくおぼえています。しかし、Scarborough Fair/Canticle（聖書の歌）という曲の由来はいろいろありますが、当時のベトナム戦争反対の歌の一つとして考えられています。さて、変遷はいろいろとありますが、Simon & Garfunkelの歌の歌詞を見てみましょう。

後半は、反戦的な内容になっています。が、もととなった曲は、The Elfin Knightというballad（物語歌）です。この曲を聞くと、Scarborough周辺の景色に合っている曲調のように感じます。イングランド北部にはヒース(heath）と呼ばれるheather (heath）という植物が繁殖する土地があります。たびたびくりかえされる薬草の名前、Parsley sage rosemary and thymeがとても印象的です。意味はあるようですが、ここでは省略し、この歌にとってはなくてはならないフレーズです。

歌詞の本当の意味は誰もわからないでしょう。童謡(nursery thymes)や民謡(folk songs)はみんなそうです。Scarboroughという地名もなんだかわからず当時は聞いて、実際に行ってみて、こうして由来を調べてみると、人の歴史が少しわかります。Scarboroughの近くにはWhitbyという町もあります。この辺りは海岸沿いに北部イングランドらしい景色が続いています。
