　　Meet the Scottish Samurai who helped build modern Japan

Thomas Blake Gloverは、長崎のグラバー邸で知られています。スコットランドで生まれ、幕末の頃に日本に来て、日本の明治の開国を支援し、ビジネスを展開した人です。最近次のような記事を見ました。

He was the pioneer who left his home in Aberdeenshire at the age of 21 to establish a new life in Japan and went on to build a legacy which transformed the country. Thomas Blake Glover’s contribution to Japan’s industrialisation includes the introduction of the first railway locomotive and first mint; mechanisation of coalmines; the founding of the Japanese Navy; and modernisation of the shipbuilding industry. His own company grew into Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd .  He was known as the 'Scottish Samurai' and was the first non-Japanese person to be awarded the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun. He died in 1911 in Tokyo. Now over a century after his death, a new tenant operator is being sought for the historic Glover House, which has long been associated with Glover after his family purchased the property in 1864.　・・・・

つまり、保存してくれる人を探しているということです。私はこの家を１５年以上も前に訪ねたことがあります。YouTubeで見つけたビデオは１３年前のものです。私が訪れたのはその前で、きちんと公開されていました。そのときも、訪問者は私一人で、時代の流れを感じました。が、さらに時が過ぎ、風前の灯火という感じです。

Thomas Blake Gloverは、イギリス人として紹介されていますが、当時工業系はスコットランドの人が多く、優秀な技術者はスコットランド人です。明治の頃は、日本とスコットランドはさまざまに交流しています。上記のAberdeenはスコットランドでも北部の都市ですが、彼のおかげで訪れた人はかなりいます。

Scottish Samurai (McKay, 1993)によれば、1865年の6月に19人の薩摩藩士（五代友厚、森有礼など）がSouthampton, Englandに降り立ち、すでに滞在していた長州藩士（山尾庸三など）の世話でロンドン大学で語学研修をした。その中で、１３歳で渡った長澤鼎はAberdeenの学校に通ったそうです。それ以前にも伊藤博文や井上馨などもGloverの世話でAberdeenに滞在していたと言われています。

Scotlandには、'lad o' pairts'ということばがあります。'a boy should strive to be an all-rounder, a pioneer, broad in knowledge and at the same time practical'という意味です。私はこのことばが好きです。性差別となるのかもしれませんが、時代が時代で、Gloverが日本に来て、多くの若い日本人を応援したのは、もちろんビジネスもあるでしょうが、長澤鼎がその後アメリカにわたりワインなどのビジネスで大成功したというのを聞くと、'lad o' pairts'の精神が導いたのかと思います。

Scotlandは私の研究の礎となった場所です。これからも大切にしたいと思っています。縁があって長崎に行くことも多くなりました。たぶん、Thomas Blake Gloverのおかげでしょう。
