William WordsworthとDaffodils 2024年11月26日（火）

 詩人はたくさんいます。個人的には、英詩といえば、William Wordsworthをすぐに思い起こします。イングランドのLake Districtに３０年ほど前に家族と訪ねたときに、Dove Cottegeなど、その世界を知りました。懐かしく思い出します。私のようなしろうとでも知っている有名な詩があります。Daffodilsです（と思っていますが、今の若い人はあまり知らないようです）。

　　Daffodils Poem by William Wordsworth - I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the milky way,

They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay:

The thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they

Outdid the sparkling waves in glee:

A poet could not but be gay,

In sich a jocund company:

I gazed--and gazed--but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

The flash upon that inward wye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.

浪漫的なとても美しい詩で、春に英国に行くとdaffodilsはあちらこちらに咲いています。日本のさくらのような感じでしょうか。

William Wordsworthは、こちらも有名なSamuel Taylor Coleridgeと出版したLyrical ballads, with a few other poems (1798)という詩集が有名です。その中にウェールズにあるTintern Abbeyを読んだ詩があります。こちらも家族で訪れたことがある廃墟となった修道院です。大塚英語教育研究会の先生たちが企画したツアーで訪ねました。詩の冒頭の部分は次のようになっています。

Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey

Five years have passed; five summers, with the length

Of five long winters! and again I hear

These waters, rolling from their mountain-springs

With a sweet inland murmur. —Once again

Do I behold these steep and lofty cliffs,

Which on a wild secluded scene impress

Thoughts of more deep seclusion; and connect

The landscape with the quiet of the sky.

自然を愛するWordsworthらしい詩です。英語を学ぶことは、ことばを学ぶと同時に、ことばが表す意味を考えることが重要です。発音、語彙、文法や技能が重視されるのはある面で仕方がないかもしれません。ことばが使われる意味や背景はもっと注目される必要があります。Wordsworthの詩は、私にそれを教えてくれています。
